Three of four NCAA men’s lacrosse teams competing in The Crown Lacrosse Classic at the Sportsplex at Matthews on March 8 and 10 jumped into the Top 10 of the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Coaches Poll on Monday.
“As a fan of lacrosse and really all high level sports, to have an event that includes three of the top 10 teams in the country playing in our backyard is about exciting as it gets,” said The Crown Lacrosse Classic co-founder Chris Schiller. “It’s rare to find this type of environment unless you go to the final four in lacrosse. The response to this event locally has been fantastic and it will only grow the higher these teams continue to climb nationally. This is the exact environment we wanted to create for the lacrosse community in the Carolinas.”
Penn State and Towson each started the season undefeated this past weekend. The Nittany Lions opened the season at No. 9 in the USILA preseason poll, but after defeating Villanova in the season opener, and later topping Robert Morris behind a record-setting 27-10 victory, Penn State moved five spots to No. 4. Towson trounced No. 7 Johns Hopkins 17-8 in the season opener, vaulting to the No. 7 spot in the national polls. While Cornell’s regular season doesn’t start until March 22 at Hobart College, the Big Red still sit at No. 5 in the poll.
The Crown Lacrosse Classic is the first independent college lacrosse tournament to be held in Charlotte, and will feature four of the nation’s premier programs – Cornell Big Red, Jacksonville Dolphins, Penn State State Nittany Lions and Towson Tigers.
"I think it is an awesome opportunity for everyone involved, especially for us to have the opportunity to go down and compete in a premier event with other top-caliber Division I teams,” Towson lacrosse head coach Shawn Nadelen said. “We are big believers in doing as much as we can to help the sport of lacrosse grow and develop."
In addition to bringing high-level lacrosse to Charlotte, a portion of the proceeds and in-game fundraising events will benefit the first responders of the Carolinas.
“This also gives us an opportunity to thank our first responders who serve our communities every single day 24/7,” Schiller said. “I’ve seen it first hand how these men and woman dedicate their time/lives to answer the call when our community needs it. To put their life on the line literally to save ours, we are honored to be donating and actively raising money during The Crown for these amazing people.”
