Bobby Selkin and Charlotte Secondary Lacrosse to be recognized in Celebration of Lacrosse at The Crown

The Penn State Lacrosse Class of 1996 and 2000, along with Crown Lacrosse Classic’s Celebration of Lacrosse, donated 25 tickets to the Charlotte Secondary Lacrosse Program for the inaugural Crown Lacrosse Classic.

“What we are seeing here are individuals who have received so much from the game of lacrosse and they want to do what they can to give back,” The Crown Lacrosse Classic co-founder Chris Schiller said. “This is the true spirit of what this event and lacrosse in general is about.  To have these classes donate/give back to those just getting into the sport and for those less fortunate, it is everything that you want to see from this strong community.”

Charlotte Secondary School lacrosse head Bobby Selkin started the program after athletic director Teddy Walker saw the gift of lacrosse equipment as a way to build character and spirit at his school. In 2015, Selkin recruited a group of student-athletes who were unequivocally unfamiliar with lacrosse. He led a group of at-risk African American teenagers, who found opportunity and empowerment through lacrosse The sports served as way to build teamwork, drive and perseverance and ultimately a source of pride and a path to college. Selkin’s group even went on to become state champions.

“As an already rapidly growing sport, lacrosse has an opportunity to grow at an even faster pace by bringing diversity into the sport and introducing lacrosse to communities that have never seen the sport.” Charlotte Secondary School lacrosse head coach Bobby Selkin said. “Our lacrosse program at Charlotte Secondary is striving to do just that.

“By bringing teams such as Penn State, Cornell, Towson and Jacksonville to Charlotte, N.C., our families have an opportunity to be introduced to the highest level of college lacrosse and impact our students to play a game because they are so inspired.”

The Crown Lacrosse Classic is the first independent college lacrosse tournament to be held in Charlotte, and will feature four of the nation’s premier programs, including three ranked in the top-five - No. 1 Towson Tigers, No. 2 Cornell Big Red, No. 4 Penn State State Nittany Lions and Jacksonville Dolphins.

"I think it is an awesome opportunity for everyone involved, especially for us to have the opportunity to go down and compete in a premier event with other top-caliber Division I teams,” Towson lacrosse head coach Shawn Nadelen said. “We are big believers in doing as much as we can to help the sport of lacrosse grow and develop.”

Charlotte Secondary School and Selkin’s story is highlighted in the ESPN Films documentary “Crossroads,” directed by Emmy Award-winning sports documentary producer Ron Yassen and executive produced by Houston Rockets star and North Carolina native Chris Paul.

The level of lacrosse that will be on display during these two days of play will be like something that may not be around here again.”

Towson recently knocked off former No. 1 Loyola to improve to 4-0 on the season before leap frogging into the top spot in in all-three national polls for the first time in program history. Cornell defeated Albany 17-16 over the weekend, earning the No. 2 spot in the USILA Warrior/New Balance Division I Coaches' Poll. To put their life on the line literally to save ours, we are honored to be donating and actively raising money during The Crown for these amazing people.”

The Crown Lacrosse Classic features top 10 trio in Penn State, Cornell and Towson

Three of four NCAA men’s lacrosse teams competing in The Crown Lacrosse Classic at the Sportsplex at Matthews on March 8 and 10 jumped into the Top 10 of the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Coaches Poll on Monday.

“As a fan of lacrosse and really all high level sports, to have an event that includes three of the top 10 teams in the country playing in our backyard is about exciting as it gets,” said The Crown Lacrosse Classic co-founder Chris Schiller. “It’s rare to find this type of environment unless you go to the final four in lacrosse.  The response to this event locally has been fantastic and it will only grow the higher these teams continue to climb nationally.  This is the exact environment we wanted to create for the lacrosse community in the Carolinas.”

Penn State and Towson each started the season undefeated this past weekend. The Nittany Lions opened the season at No. 9 in the USILA preseason poll, but after defeating Villanova in the season opener, and later topping Robert Morris behind a record-setting 27-10 victory, Penn State moved five spots to No. 4. Towson trounced No. 7 Johns Hopkins 17-8 in the season opener, vaulting to the No. 7 spot in the national polls. While Cornell’s regular season doesn’t start until March 22 at Hobart College, the Big Red still sit at No. 5 in the poll.

The Crown Lacrosse Classic is the first independent college lacrosse tournament to be held in Charlotte, and will feature four of the nation’s premier programs – Cornell Big Red, Jacksonville Dolphins, Penn State State Nittany Lions and Towson Tigers.

Powell will play the pregame shows at the Sportsplex at Matthews on Friday, March 8 from 4-5:30 p.m. and on Sunday, March 10 from 11:30 - 1 p.m. Powell will also perform at Blackfinn Ameripub in Ballantyne on March 9 from 9-11 p.m.

“We want the weekend of March 8 to be a celebration of the lacrosse world in the south,” said The Crown Lacrosse Classic co-founder Chris Schiller. “Bringing in Mike Powell to play three sets and Blackfinn in the Ballantyne Village as our official tailgating venue together as our sponsor, continues our goal of making this the ultimate experience for lacrosse fans. Mike is one of the best lacrosse players of all time who is now an extremely talented artist. We can’t wait to expose his great music to those coming to the Crown.”

“Blackfinn is excited to partner with this fantastic event coming to our city,” said Blackfinn Managing Partner Jeremy Ashe. “With lacrosse having become such a huge part of the local high school sports scene over the last few years as well as the growing popularity of the professional team – Charlotte Hounds – we feel honored to be a part of bringing more exposure to this great sport. Being able to bring Mike Powell to the Village Plaza will provide our guests an up close concert experience that they cannot get anywhere around here! We hope this partnership adds to the success of the Crown Lacrosse event and helps grow it for years to come!”

Powell is no stranger to the lacrosse community. The Syracuse alum enjoyed both an illustrious collegiate and professional career. The Orangeman was a four-time First Team All-American, and a four-time finalist for the Tewaaraton Trophy, one of just two players to win the award twice. He led Syracuse to two national championships and in 2004 Powell scored 89 points (47 goals, 42 assists), surpassing the Syracuse record shared by his two older brothers to become the all-time leading scorer at Syracuse with 307 points.

Powell later joined Major League Lacrosse and was drafted by the then Baltimore Bayhawks, where he led the team to a league title.

Mike Powell is a traveling storyteller and prolific writer who garnered international attention with his song “Twenty One Rounds” written as part of the Acoustic Guitar Project. NYS Music dubbed him “one of the premier singer/songwriters in music today.” Powell has toured with Sarah Lee Guthrie and Johnny Irion and shared the stage with David Lindley, Martin Sexton, Shooter Jennings & many more. His sound is honest, songs are heartfelt and his shows are real.

Mike Powell is currently writing for his fifth solo release while playing a summer full of northeast tour dates. The latest single, Twenty One Rounds, is a story of a fallen Navy sailor and was conceived when Powell was selected to participate in the Acoustic Guitar Project in 2016. The studio version was released via Powell’s social media channels on Memorial Day 2018. It was delivered to streaming services for a wider release two weeks later. A solo EP is expected late summer 2018 and another record from Mike Powell & The Black River is slated for early 2019. Powell will return to the road in 2019 bringing the new music to venues nationally.
